According to Hindu mythology, this is where the Hindu god Rama sailed across the sea to Sri Lanka to rescue his wife Sita from the abductor Ravana. The Ramanathaswamy Temple, dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, is found in the heart of the city and is almost exclusively associated with Rama. The sanctuary adjacent to the city is seen as a heavenly pilgrimage site for both Saivas and Vaishnavisms and fosters unity among them. Rameswaram has many holy and tourist places nearby.
