Rameswaram, A Holy Place
Rameswaram is a wonderful place in the temple with Ram temple. Rameswaram is not only a major pilgrimage for Hindus but also a holiday destination. Rameswaram holds significance for Hindus as Benaras Yatra is incomplete without Rameswaram Yatra.
One of the twelve Jyotirlingams of India, Sri Ramanatha Swamy’s lingam is the most important deity. Rameswaram is also popularly referred to as the ‘Benaras of the South’. It is believed that visiting Rameswaram is mandatory to attain Moksha. Along with Varanasi, it is considered one of the holiest places in India for Hindus and forms part of the Char Dham Yatra.
According to Hindu mythology, this is where the Hindu god Rama sailed across the sea to Sri Lanka to rescue his wife Sita from the abductor Ravana. The Ramanathaswamy Temple, dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, is found in the heart of the city and is almost exclusively associated with Rama. The sanctuary adjacent to the city is seen as a heavenly pilgrimage site for both Saivas and Vaishnavisms and fosters unity among them. Rameswaram has many holy and tourist places nearby.
